Children typically need to have dental x-rays performed more often because their teeth are still growing. Their new teeth need to be carefully monitored so that they grow into healthy adult teeth. Dental x-rays can show if baby teeth need to be pulled in order to prevent complications.

Getting dental x-rays comes with certain risks such as radiation. However, the exposure levels are so low that they’re usually considered completely safe for both children and adults. Getting dental x-rays is usually not recommended for pregnant women. This is because any level of radiation is considered unsafe for the developing fetus. Thankfully, dental x-rays required no extra preparation. X-rays are typically performed before you get a dental cleaning. When you are at the dentist’s office, you will be sitting in a chair with a lead vest placed across your chest. An x-ray machine will be positioned alongside your head to help record images from different angles of your mouth. The dental x-rays can be performed either in the same room as your cleanings or in a separate room.
